CEO cannot overinvest in people. How to create Type-A teams

Author: Andrew Nurumov
Teaming, Horizontal organization culture, Versatile leadership style of CEO, etc… Many practices allow to enhance effectiveness of your team, but for creation of type-A team it is important to start properly from scratch – to choose right people and then to develop them properly at motivating work environment. Below there are 5 essential advices that work for type-A teams based on my experience:
1. Invest in experience. Hire people that bring necessary professional experience and best practices to you team. For instance, for one position I decided to hire only from Microsoft, IBM or SAP from specific grade. For another – from big-3 consulting firms, also from specific grade. Always know minimum experience background for a future role in your company. And do not create illusory expectations for role qualifications – know concrete background of people that your recruiters search for.
2. Do not tolerate absence of proactivity. Simply because proactivity of your team is minimum proactivity level among your employees. Proactivity of your organization is minimum proactivity among different departments. And proactivity of organization directly relates to extra performance for experienced teams.
3. Maintain result-oriented, transparent, and respectful culture. 3 adjectives speak for themselves.
4. Develop on regular basis personal growth opportunities for your employees. Base them on company strategy and objectives. Employees will say you thanks for this. Simply because proactive people like adventures, and there are no such many opportunities in labor market that provide innovative challenges.
5. Always pay at least market-based compensation and minimize share of part-time employees. Otherwise, you create unsustainable situations. This is applicable not only for corporations, but also for startups.
Last but not least, your company should have HR brand to attract best employees. But how to create and maintain it – is a separate post.
